Sweet But Salty?

For a long time, I have been told that I am worth my weight in gold. That usually led to some contemplations about weight and worth and some darkly humorous observations. So, no. Not a self deprecating title this time. I thought about my tongue, how I describe it as the sharpest part on my body, and how it can often be “salty”. When I was a freshman, I recalled learning about the worth of salt in European History–the preservation, the taste, the process, the monetary exchange. Roman soldiers were paid partially in salt. The root of soldier is said to originate from this “sal dare”, or in other words to give salt. Salary (“salarium”) comes from this same exchange.

There are a couple of other phrases that spring to mind in relation to salt. “Salt of the earth” and “worth her salt”. To spice up the metaphor, there is also the idea of salt adding flavor–too light of hand and it’s not enough and too much makes one choke and potentially grasp at the heart.

Being the salt of the earth type I am, welcome to my blog that will add a bit of flavor to the ordinary quotidian and refrain from being too heavy handed with the satire. Perhaps, then, I will be
